Contemplating with Mary
the Face of the Suffering Christ

Using the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary

Ideas for using the Liturgy

(For many victims of abuse, especially sexual abuse, a feminine figure may seem more able to identify with their pain. Mary offers an image of one who has seen her beloved child suffer and die and may be seen to offer a pure maternal concern for one who has been abused)

The suggestion is to light a candle – a sign of the light being stronger even than the darkness of Vigil or at the foot of the Cross when all hope seemed to be failing. It is, however, optional. If not used, substitute: “We contemplate … an agony”

Reader We will light a light in the name of Sorrow:
The light and life of God
confronting all the forces of darkness and despair.
ALL                 AND JESUS SAID,
"LET THIS CUP PASS FROM ME;
YET NOT MY WILL BUT YOURS BE DONE."

Pause for silence or gentle chant of lament or sorrow

Reader We light a light for an agony:
ALL PRAYERS FROM THE HEART
SEEMING TO GO UNANSWERED.
One decade of the Rosary

Reader We light a light for a scourging:
ALL A VICTIM
AT THE MERCY OF THE CRUELTY OF OTHERS.
One decade of the Rosary

Reader We light a light for crowning - with thorns:
ALL THE PAIN - THE TORMENT
OF PUBLIC HUMILIATION.
One decade of the Rosary

Reader We light a light for a carrying
ALL BEARING BURDENS OF SILENCE -
BELIEVING THE SIN OF ANOTHER
TO BE SIN COMMITTED BY ONESELF.
One decade of the Rosary

Reader We light a light for a dying
ALL THE ULTIMATE LOSS
THE PROMISE OF ULTIMATE GAIN
One decade of the Rosary
