Lent 2007

Year C: Fifth Sunday of Lent

First Reading: Isaiah 43: 16-21

We usually associate the prophet Isaiah with Advent and Christmas. It is likely, in fact, that the Book of Isaiah was written by several people - but they shared one thing in common - the unshakeable certainty that God would be faithful to His people and, whatever the suffering now, God would redeem His people.

This chapter begins with a famous passage, “Do not be afraid...I have called you by name, you are mine...etc.”

It speaks of God’s tender love for the people of Israel and of His promise to bring them home.

Isaiah reminds his readers of the great things God did for them in the past - especially how they were saved from certain death and slavery when God led them through the Red Sea. If God did that for them in the past - He will surely do a new deed to save them now - they only have to look and read the signs of God at work...

What does it mean for me?

Read the passage slowly and hear it as if God is speaking directly to you...

Savour the feeling of unconditional love and promise of protection it offers.
