Lent 2007

Year C: Third Sunday of Lent

First Reading: Exodus 3:1-8,13-15

The First Reading is also about someone meeting their Maker - but who lived to tell the tale...In fact, the rest of Moses’ life was bound up in that encounter
between himself and God in the burning bush.

Moses was quite happy as a shepherd looking after his father-in-law’s sheep - but God had seen the plight of His people and had chosen Moses as the person to lead them into the land of milk and honey.

He cannot quite believe it - and can only see the problems ahead - not least convincing the Israelites that it really is God who is behind it all.

God brooks no argument - He tells Moses to speak of Him as “I Am” and to tell the Israelites that He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

In fact, Moses takes even more convincing that is recorded here - but, eventually, goes back to the Israelites and to Pharaoh and, in time, his labours bear fruit in the liberation of the People of God and their settlement in the Promised Land.

What does it mean for me?

The process of conversion involves an encounter with God - something that attracts us and draws us into wanting to know more - though not always as dramatic as this one.

What attracted you to faith and a relationship with God?
