Year C: Third Sunday of Lent

The Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

Today’s Gospel shows us that, although Jesus is compassionate, He is also pretty direct in His insistence that people change their ways.

Jesus uses events that were happening around Him to warn people of the consequences of not repenting - the Galileans and the people at Siloam were not any better or any worse than anybody else - but Jesus suggests that they were not ready for death - perhaps they had not fully made their peace with God and the neighbour.

At first sight, this seems terrifying - for who can ever truly be ready to “meet their Maker”?

The parable of the Unfruitful Fig-Tree offers some hope. In it, the owner of the vineyard orders the tree to be cut down but is persuaded to wait a little longer.

The man who looks after the vineyard suggests giving it another year, during which he will try a few tricks of the trade to see whether it can be brought into fruiting. If after all that, it still fails to produce fruit, then it is just a waste of space and should give way to something more fruitful.

What does it mean for me?

Where is your life bearing fruit?

Are you holding back from something that you sense God is asking of you?
What?
And what needs to be done so that you can respond?
What remains to be done before you are ready to “meet your Maker”?
