Wellspring of Scripture

Fifth Sunday

Second Reading - Apocalypse 21: 1-5

Another Reading from the Book of Apocalypse that we can remember when people try to use it to spread doom and gloom!

A new heaven - a new earth - and God living among His people - and a promise that God, Himself, will wipe away all tears - and there will be no more death, mourning or sadness:

A promise to those who mourn a loved one.

A promise to those facing torture and suffering.

A promise to ordinary people trying to keep faith.

A promise that the past - with its painful memories - will be gone for ever.

A promise that all that is good will be brought to fulfilment as the whole of creation is made new.

It seems too good to be true.

But if it is true - if God does keep His promises -isn’t it something to be longed for rather than feared?

What does it mean for me?

Which promise speaks most to you today?

What else might you look forward to in a new heaven and earth?
